Saudi Arabia is 60 Hz; the rest of the Gulf is 50 Hz
The Saudi grid operates at 60 Hz, 380/220 V three-phase (with 480 V on some industrial and Aramco-standard sites). The United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman operate at 50 Hz, 400/230 V. Any generator that will parallel with the utility, feed an ATS, or run standard local equipment must match the grid frequency of the country it is installed in.
That is why a set bought for a Dubai project cannot be trucked across the Batha border and connected in Riyadh: motors run 20 % fast, transformers saturate, and the controller refuses to synchronise.
What frequency changes on the generator
Frequency is set by engine speed: a four-pole alternator produces 50 Hz at 1500 rpm and 60 Hz at 1800 rpm. The same engine therefore delivers more power at 60 Hz — a Perkins 2206A-E13TAG2 is rated about 400 kVA standby at 50 Hz and about 438 kVA at 60 Hz. Fuel consumption per hour is higher at 1800 rpm, and service intervals are set by hours run, so the 60 Hz set works a little harder for its extra output.
Most modern sets can be re-configured from one frequency to the other by a technician — governor and controller settings, alternator connection, sometimes the radiator fan — but it must be done by the supplier with the OEM ratings reissued, not on site with a screwdriver.
Buying for Saudi projects
Specify 60 Hz, 1800 rpm, 380/220 V (or 480 V where the site standard requires it) on every enquiry for the Kingdom, and check that the datasheet in the offer is the 60 Hz sheet — the ratings, dimensions and fuel curve differ from the 50 Hz sheet of the same model. If you are buying used or import stock, ask for the nameplate photo: frequency and rpm are stamped on it. A “bargain” 50 Hz set that needs conversion, re-rating and re-certification rarely stays a bargain.
