How to choose drill bits, discs and blades

  • ✓Match the bit to the material: HSS or cobalt bits for steel and stainless steel, masonry bits for brick and block, and SDS-plus or SDS-max bits for concrete with a rotary hammer.
  • ✓Check the shank and arbor fit: SDS-plus and SDS-max bits are not interchangeable, and discs and blades must match the bore size of your grinder or saw (for example 22.2 mm on many angle grinders).
  • ✓Never exceed the maximum speed (RPM) marked on a disc or blade, and use a disc diameter that matches the tool and its guard.
  • ✓Use thin cutting discs for cutting and thicker grinding discs or flap discs for grinding; do not grind with the face of a cutting disc.
  • ✓For hard materials such as granite, porcelain and reinforced concrete, diamond blades and diamond core bits cut faster and last longer than abrasive discs.
